Pedestrian Plaza

Introduction

There is a proposal to establish a pedestrian plaza in Sir Thyagaraya Nagar to utilize the space available on the existing road and pavement to incorporate all essential pedestrian amenities and create an open social space outside shops free of automobiles. People, particularly senior citizens and the differently-abled, will finally have a place to walk, shop, eat and lounge freely without the fear of motor accidents. In many instances, the pedestrianisation of roads has acted as a catalyst for economic growth, attracting tourists and locals alike.

About Pedestrian Plaza Project

The pedestrian plaza planned by Chennai Smart City Limited and the Greater Chennai Corporation will be established on Sir Thyagaraya Road between Panagal Park and Mount Road. The section will be characterized by 3 types of cross sections.

This proposal consists of the following components:

  2. Improving the pedestrian walkways on both sides of the road
  3. Providing hassle-free wheelchair passage for senior citizens and the disabled
  4. Providing easy entrance and exit to shops so that people can come and go freely
  5. Providing traffic islands with signals at the various junctions along this stretch
  6. Providing high mast lamp posts and ornamental lamp posts to ensure enough lighting for the pedestrian walkways and good lighting of the area
  7. Providing amenities like drinking water, e-toilets and resting benches
  8. Establishing a roadside parking facility for two-wheelers and four-wheelers
  9. Introducing battery operated buggies for convenient mobility of commuters, especially for senior citizens.
